Netherlands
Issuing club: Nederlandse Cairn Terrier Club (NCTC), under the Raad van Beheer
- Patella luxation Required · Both parents
Grades 3 and 4 may not be bred. Grade 2 may be bred only with a partner that is PL free or PL free flexible (PL 0/0).
A vet appointed by the Raad van Beheer. A declaration from the breeder own vet is explicitly not sufficient - an official Raad van Beheer certificate is required.

- PSS / liver shunt Required · Both parents
Dogs suffering from liver shunt may not be bred. A parent combination that produced a sufferer may not be repeated.
Through the NCTC, by a vet appointed for it by the UKG. The club notes this applies especially to imported dogs.
Who may do it: Levershunt (portosystemische shunt) · Nederlandse Cairn Terrier Club, with the companion-animal clinic of Utrecht University

All puppies must be tested. A copy of the result goes to the new owner.

Breeding conditions
- A bitch may not be mated by her grandfather, father, brother, son or grandson.
- Stud minimum age 15 months. A younger stud may mate twice, but from 12 months a patella luxation test is then required.
- Bitch minimum age 16 months.
- First litter: the bitch may not be mated after 72 months - she must be mated before her sixth birthday.
- Later litters: not after 96 months, her eighth birthday.
- Maximum 5 litters in her lifetime.
- At least 12 months between the BIRTHS of two litters - not between matings, and skipping a season is no longer sufficient.
- Puppies may leave from 8 weeks, with at least 7 days between any vaccination and the transfer.
Dogs registered elsewhere
- Explicitly permissive, so that foreign studs are not discouraged: a foreign stud need not meet the NCTC health requirements, but must meet the health requirements of its country of origin.
- Studs from non-FCI countries have special rules, which this source points to the VFR document for and does not reproduce.
Read this first
- Two layers bind: Raad van Beheer national rules, several following from the Wet Dieren, plus the NCTC breed-specific VFR on top.
- No eye examination and no DNA parentage requirement appears on this source. That is not the same as their being absent from the VFR document itself, which has not been read.
- The breeder of the litter is responsible for meeting every requirement. The club warns that the patella examination in particular had repeatedly not been done on time or correctly.
